About

Dedicated in 2002, the African-American Monument stands on Rousakis Riverfront Plaza along River Street. Savannah sculptor Dorothy Spradley's bronze shows a family of four embracing, with broken shackles at their feet, on a granite pedestal.

It honors the contributions of African Americans to Savannah and acknowledges the transatlantic slave trade. The inscription on the base is by Maya Angelou and ends: "Today, we are standing up together, with faith and even some joy."
